Make Extra Money Blogging With Google Adsense

Many people, when they start a blog, start it with an idea to eventually make extra money blogging. A simple way to boost blogging for money formula, is to add Google Adsense to your blog. Surely, this is not going to make you a millionaire, but you can definitely make extra money with Google Adsense and that feat alone may be an excellent incentive to keep plugging along.

What Is Google Adsense

Wikipedia defines Google Adsense as:

Google AdSense is a program run by Google Inc. that allows publishers in the Google Network of content sites to serve automatic text, image, video, or interactive media adverts that are targeted to site content and audience (en.wikipedia.org)

According to Google:

Google AdSense is a free, simple way for website publishers of all sizes to earn money by displaying targeted Google ads on their websites. AdSense also lets you provide Google search to your site users, while earning money by displaying Google ads on the search results pages support.google.com

The video below, from the same Google source, very simply explains the Adsense program.

How To Get Google Adsense Started On Your Money Blog

Getting a Google Adsene account is free. To sign up for it, simply visit the following link and fill out the application: https://www.google.com/adsense/signup.

Before you apply to get your Adsense account make sure that you have a site with unique, well written, value content on it and that you are receiving some targeted traffic already. In some countries, the site may have to be in existence for at least 6 months. This policy was implemented by Google to protect its advertisers.

Google is quite strict when it comes to approving new Adsense accounts. There are couple of crucial steps you will need to follow to ensure that your application is processed favorably.

1. Create a well designed and value information site. Google wants your site to be a valuable resource for the readers. The general consensus among internet marketers is that you should have at least 10 original and well written articles on your money blog before you apply.

2. Have Privacy Policy, About page and a Contact page set up and displayed (usually on your navigation bar). For the Privacy policy you will need to follow certain guidelines. You may check my privacy policy. You can generate this policy using the free Privacy Policy generator here. I used it to create my Privacy Policy.

Once you will get approved you will receive your approval and your account information via email. At first, your account will only be temporary. This is to ensure that you will follow the guidelines and not do something ridiculous as clicking on the ads on your site, flood your site with Adsense ads, buying clicks on Fiverr or anything else that looks suspicious to Google.

As soon as your site is approved, you can place adsense ads on other sites that you own as well. You do not have to apply for each site separately. After a few weeks, if you do not commit any “suspicious activities” in the eyes of Google, you will get verified and you will be permanently (unless you screw up) approved. You will be able to make extra money blogging with Google Adsense, from all your sites for as long as you keep in line with Google terms.

How Does One Make Extra Money Blogging With Adsense

After you get approved, you will have to create the ad units you want to place on your money blog. You will need to sign in to your Adsense account using the link you received in your email. Enter the “My Ads” tab in your dashboard, click on “New Content” and then click on “New ad unit”. For more information and a clear view of all steps visit the following help page.

Create An Adsense Unit For Your Money Blog

From Google’s instructions on how to create ad units

Upon completing the set up of the ad units you will receive a code from Google. You can place this code anywhere on your site. You can place the codes directly into the posts or pages, in the sidebar, under the header, in the header and so on.

You can place the ad units manually on your site or you can choose from a variety of adsense plugins that will place the units on your site automatically in the manner you specify. The one adsense plugin I used in the past was the Easy Adsense WordPress plugin. I used the free, lite version and it worked very well for me. If you want to have a plugin to control the placement of ads, I recommend it (The Lite free version is all I used and it is sufficient).

How Blogging Spree Blog Is Monetized With Adsense

A few days ago I monetized Blogging Spree blog with Google Adsense. I placed the ads manually in 3 spots . As at this point I want the ads to appear across the board on most of my pages and posts. I have added a set of links under the header and also I have added a banner ad in the sidebar.

To add Google Adsense to your sidebar use a text widget in your widget’s dashboard and add the code directly into the text widget (you can read more about adding text widgets here…)

What I love about Google Adsense is that the types of displayed ads adjust to the topic of the post or a page on the blog unlike the static ads we place in, for example sidebars, of our sites . Below I am going to show the example of how it works and how the ads displayed correlate to the topic of the posts. I’ll show you 2 examples of posts with completely different topics:

1. Ad displayed on the post “Easy Way To Change Admin Username…

Monetizing a blog with Google Adsense

An example of ad units on Blogging Spree

Related Adsense Ad On A Money BlogNotice that the Adsense ads were place under the header advertisement as a link unit and in the side bar as an image unit. Both the, the link unit (hard to see in the image) and the image in the sidebar were adjusted to the message of the post.

The correlation or the relatedness of the image to the post was quite significant. You can see the example of the image on the right, I copied the image from the ad. Clearly, the blog post talks about blog security and I guess Network Security was as close as Google could come up with related content. And, that is pretty darn good.

2. The other example is from a completely different topic post, namely “How To Start Bogging…

Another example of a related adsense ads on my money blog

Another Example Of Adsense Ad Units On Blogging Spree

Notice the ad in the sidebar. It is quite a bit different than the one related to security discussed above. You can very clearly see that this particular ad offers the reader a possibility to create free websites. To tell you the truth, I spotted these images on other websites and I believe I even clicked on some of them before. Obviously, the ads work.

Just before I will conclude the post I wanted to mention that when you are setting these ads on your site for the first time you may want to go crazy placing them all over the site, labeling them with enticing phrases, etc. Don’t do this!

Always remember, that Google distributes the ads on behalf of many marketers just like you and I. Make sure to treat the ads the same way you would want someone else treat your ads on their website.

This concludes, todays post. Hopefully you gained some insight on how to make extra money blogging with Google Adsense. Once you are approved, Adsense is really simple to implement on your site. Providing that you will continue to churn valuable content and will not misuse this wonderful blog monetizing tool, you will be able to make a modest passive income from your site for years to come. I look forward to your feedback.

    Hi Dita,
Yes, we can make some good money by putting adsense add in our blog. All we need is to create high quality content. Traffic plays most value if we think more income from adsense. Getting good traffic mainly from search engines convert well.
I see many people get their adsense account approve in a month. Even one of my friend got his account in his first month with 17 articles (over 800+ words). There is no need to wait for 6 months. If you have high quality content and well designed site you can get approve easily.

More ever, you need a lot of traffic to make good income from Adsense. (Not for getting approve)

However, well written detailed article will surely help newbie bloggers to make extra income.

Would love to know about your experience on placing Link Unit on Header. will you my respected sister Dita?

    Hey Dita,
I completely agree that Bloggers make hell a lot of money from Google Adsense as it is one of the top Ad network around. Many find Google Adsense difficult as their policy is very strict which is good coz they charge the advertisers a lot.
As a Blogger am happy to such a cool network to earn online.

Everything about Adsense banks on the amount of traffic coming into your blog. And also the type of ads(Either text or Image). Point is, some people have close to 5000 daily visitors and end up with a few pennies like $5 to $10 daily. While others with less than that amount of traffic make makes close to $30 -$40 daily. Its all depends on how you place your ads and the impression in leave in the mind of your visitors. The generation of this days are weary of advertisement, promotions and free offers online. So and Image ad just screams ”Hey i am an ad, I am not the reason you are here, dont click me”. People wouldn’t click your ads if ads are scattered everywhere on your blog, especially Image ads. So what you need to do is to put ads in strategic positions and use mainly text ads. Others may say text ads would reduce the amount of ads being displayed daily on your blog, but it also helps improve your earnings. Ok, if you put a 480 x 90 rectangle(text only) on the sidebar, visitors are likely to click it without even checking if they are ads, why? because it looks like every regular link on your blog. So what you need to do is blend/design the text ads to have the same color as the link on your blog. Also, putting text ads(horizontal sky scrapper) directly below your Nav menu, is a sure way to improve click and inevitably increase your earnings!

    Hi Dita,

I’m using Google Adsense on my second blog about internet business ideas. That blog was started in March and I didn’t use the QSC for it.
Now I’ve got around 350 daily unique visitors, which is great (most come from Google).
But I’m also experiencing a very high bounce rate – that’s why I’m doing the QSC now, to prevent my personal blog from getting that high bounce rate.

I introduced Google Adsense at the beginning of July to my internet business blog and so far I’m making a pretty decent income. I think it will already pay all my gas bills, which is a good start πŸ™‚

I’m using Ad Injection to insert ads only in the content of my posts, in the sidebar I’m having affiliate banners. Maybe I’ll change them for an ad block, since they don’t convert well.

For me it’s important to say that I would never place Google Ads in the content area of my personal blog. My internet business blog will become somewhat authoritative and will get most traffic from Google. My personal blog is just for branding myself and I think Google Adsense in the content would do me a disservice.

    Best regards,
    Jan

Google Adsense is great if your traffic amount is HUGE, else it might not generate a significant amount for your. I would personally recommend affiliate marketing for lower traffic niche specific blogs.

      Hi Joshu,

You are right, you need more traffic to generate more money from Google adsense. But, for many people, every trickle counts so even if people do not have huge traffic this is a little bonus.

I use WP Simple Adsense Insertion at one of my websites to easily insert adds into my posts and pages – I like being able to have more control over where ads are placed in my posts, depending on what the post is about. I believe I am getting great results with it – considering I haven’t touched that website in months. Oops. πŸ™‚

    Hello Dita,

Very thorough post about getting started with Google AdSense. I have had AdSense on several of my sites for a few years with very little success. I have run into others who either make some money with it and others (like me) who really don’t.

As I looked to see your Google AdSense ads, I didn’t see them at all until I realized that I use advance ad blocker (Adblock Plus) on my Firefox browser which prevents these ads from even being seen. Any one who uses an ad blocker on their browser won’t see them either. I really don’t know how many people use them, just that they do. And if so, they will not see those ads.

I have looked into other ways to use ad space on my sites, and have been more successful with Amazon and Clickbank products than with AdSense. And most of those ads are seen, even with an ad blocker. Just some food for thought.

      Hi Michel,

This is a very interesting observation. I guess I cannot do much about it. Anyone who has special software on their computers to prevent ads from showing will simply not see them.

Take care and good luck on your projects

    Hey Dita,

I like the way you have placed your ads at the top of your blog. I have placed Google adsense ads on my detox blog but not on my internet marketing one.

I was making some decent money from the ads on my detox site when I was getting a lot of traffic. Unfortunately I lost a lot of traffic when I got hit by the Google Panda & Penguin algorithm changes and my income dropped too.

I have been able to get some of my traffic back but I have had to change the position of my ads as Google does not like a lot of ads above the fold which is where I had an ad block.

I wanted to place my ads in the middle of the text of my posts but I was not able to find a plugin that worked with my theme so I have had to place them at the end of my posts for the moment.

I am considering changing my theme soon so hope to be able to rethink my Adsense strategy too.

It pays to test the postion of your ads from time to time to see what works. What works for one blogger does not always work for another.

    Good luck with your ads.

      Hi Sandy,

I can relate to your story about P&P updates and I am sorry that you have been hit so hard. I’d love to see your detox site. Maybe you can share a link here next time you visit.I placed my ads such that I have about half and half above the fold. I think is is OK. We shall see.

The Easy Adsense, if I remember correctly, will be able to place them in the middle of the post.

Thus far my ad placement (not talking about adsense yet) works the best under the header. I get quite a few clicks on that.

      Take care,

      Dita
