How To Make Money Blogging – 60 Minutes To Success

It was an exciting day today. Our small group of internet marketers has been challenged. The subject of the challenge was: how to make money blogging in 60 days or less. The idea was to determine if any blogger (including a newbie) who sets his mind to it can generate $2000.00 or more in 2 months or less.

More precisely, we were challenged to find out if it was possible for a newย  blogger to make money with a blog following a simple plan. All of the participants would adhere to the same or a similar plan in principle and would compare notes at regular intervals. The steps of the plan would be revealed to us daily by the leader of the challenge.

Make Money Blogging General Plan

1. The Goal – Make $2000.00 OR MORE

2. Total Budget – $100.00. The budget is to be used initially for the expenses that include a domain name, hosting of a blog and autoresponder.

3. Duration – 60 days

4. Minimum Time Allotted – 60 minutes per day minimum (one is not restricted to 60 minutes if one has the time)

The idea behind this plan is to demonstrate that anyone who takes consistent action can succeed and can make money with a blog. There was bit of a debate whether we would be starting a new blog or could we use existing blogs that are not yet well established with respect to traffic or making money.

I was tempted to start a new blog, but then I changed my mind. I decided to use Blogging Spree blog for the following reason: the blog is in its infancy. At the time of writing this post, the domain name is only 30 days old and I only started the blog on the 14th of February, 2013, meaning, 27 days ago.

The traffic at Blogging Spree at this time is very low and only slowly trickling in, so it will be easy to follow the progress and the results of this challenge with Google Analytics (see below). As well, all links that will point to any products I may promote will have a tracking code so that I can easily distinguish the income from any other sources.

The objective of this plan is to drive free traffic to the blog, build a list and generate money from this traffic. Once the money flows in, the process can be scaled up and one can purchase paid traffic to build the list even further for potentially more revenue.

My Initial Expense For This Blog

Required – all participants had to invest in the following 3 items

  1. Domain Name – $7.95 for a year at Netfirms
  2. Hosting – 9.95 monthly at Hostgator
  3. Autoresponder – $1.00 trial for a month at Aweber.

Optional – I chose this program to help me kick start my free traffic generating efforts

  1. Simple Traffic Solutionsย  – $4.95

My initial expenditure – $23.85

Now is the time to reveal Blogging Spree Google Analytics results at the start of this challenge:

Image 1. Initial Number Of Visitors To Blogging Spree

Can We Make Money Blogging

Google Analytics – March 13th Is The Starting Date

Blogging Spree results from Google Analytics. On March 13th (red arrow and red circle), by 9:58 pm EST there were 11 visitors to the blog. A pretty low result. Therefore I felt justified to include this site into the experiment.

The goal was set at only $2000.00 because many new and even more experienced bloggers, who have been at it for some time, don’t seem to know how to make money blogging and earn no money at all. Even if they have been blogging for a number of years. Others make only small amounts of money. This is not because it is not possible.

There are many bloggers who make money from their blogs. John Chow and Pat Flynn are just two such examples. Both of these bloggers make in excess of $40,000.00 per month from their blogging endeavors. Mind you, they have been blogging for quite a long time.

This experiment is a true experiment because, although all the participants are internet marketers, their experience varies from a newbie to a more seasoned blogger. As well, some people have very limited spare time, others may be able to devote more time to this project. It will be interesting to compare all the results and learn how the different variations in both expertise and time will affect the results.

At this point I am not sure if I’ll be reporting the results daily or weekly. I would prefer a weekly progress report because I do not want to flood this blog with just one sided reports. This could prove boring for some.

In the weekly reports I will summarize my daily activity related to Blogging Spree and the experiment. I will share with you Google Analytics data to see if the traffic is rising significantly. In addition, if there will be any sales, I will report those as well.

I am looking forward to this project and I hope you will enjoy following the progress of this blog. Please feel free to join my news and updates to make sure you don’t miss anything that is going on with the project. Together we can explore how to make money blogging by devoting only 60 focused minutes per day to the project. Can it be done? Well, we’ll find out! Looking forward to week one report.

I would love to hear your feedback. Leave me a comment and tell me what you think of this idea. And if you have a moment and like the idea please don’t forget to click the “Like” button. Thanks, I appreciate it.

Update: A lot had gone on since this challenge. I have progressed by leaps and bounds. I now consistently make money from my blog. It all started with this challenge and the course I took around the time of the challenge. By clicking on the banner below, you can get to see the exact same video that drew me to the program. Maybe it will help you too!

Pardon me but I think you have set a very tough challenge to be earning USD2000 a month within sixty days. Do you plan to sell something on your website? If so then maybe there could be a possibility to reach this target. If you are relying upon only PPC or CPA ads then it might be very challenging. How have you progress so far in terms of earning?

Hello Dita, Very interesting post and I’m sure most new bloggers think this approach is a simple one.

Unless you been blogging for sometime and have an understanding what it takes for a blog to generate a income it will be difficult to start earning. You will have to carefully plan and create a product in some form in order for people to support you.

We all started out the same way with a understanding that all we needed to do is create a blog, add our content and watch the cash come flowing in.

I think you need time to really learn what blogging’s all about before to venture out into the business world.

Thanks so much for a great read.

      Hi Rob,

Blogging takes time and you definitely have to have passion for it. Most definitely it is a learning curve and many people wrongly assume that simply writing a blog will turn the blog into a money blog. It sure can happen over a long period of time but one can help the process by writing quality articles, and help drive traffic to the blog.

I agree that one needs to learn about blogging if one wants to set it up as an online business.

    Hi Dita,

Love that you blog about your plan. Without a plan one cannot succeed. You also demonstrated that anyone who takes consistent action can succeed and can earn money with a blog. Totally agree with @Kari, blogging is all about sharing your knowledge and giving value to others and recommending tools that will benefit your readers.

I’m so interested to see how this all plays out. I have been online for over five years, and while i have found some success, I;ve never made the kind of money I was hoping for through blogging. I have put focused dedication into certain sites, and still not made a lot of money, so I’m excited to see how you do this and how it all pans out. I’m cheering for you!

      Hi Kari,

Thanks for stopping by. I will be posting weekly updates so you will be able to see exactly what progress I am making.

Blogging is a lot of work and one must really love it to continue even when we do not make sales. I look at it more as giving value to my readers. I find it very gratifying when some readers tell me how a certain piece of info is helping them. I take it as sort of a payment for my efforts.

I know that I will also make money from my site eventually, when my readers will begin to trust me and will find that the products that I am promoting on my site, I only promote because they help me (or helped me) in my business and that I genuinely believe that these products may also benefit some of my readers.

Have patience Kari. Your rewards will come as well.

      Take care,

Maybe that’s the problem. I don’t have patience. I have sold my blogs before they could really make their mark. While I made some decent money selling them, I wonder how well certain blogs would be doing if I had stuck with them.

I agree that blogging is about the rewards you get from sharing your knowledge and giving value to others. The genuine passion a writer has around a topic shines through their writing. That is one of the key things that attracts me to certain blogs and writers.

    • Dita Irvine March 17, 2013 at 11:45 am #

      Hi Christina,

Yes, traffic is a challenge but there are a lot of bloggers that have a lot of traffic but they do not make money. As bloggers and in some sense educators we have a responsibility to our readers to provide them not only with good information but help them choose products that will make them successful in their business.

We must not be afraid to make money blogging. Our readers are people who came to our blogs to learn and they will not be offended when we offer them products that helped us. I think they would expect that of us. For example, if I land on a blog that has features I would like to have on my site I would like to know how I can do that too. If it means I would have to purchase a plugin to show me the way I would happy to do so. I would hope that the person who introduced me to that plugin will get the commission. She or he would deserve it.

      Have a great day,

Excellent and well written post on the challenge I agree with Glenn above also about how some people may take to the challenge, also with Sandy on working to a routine plan is the best way to get consistent and positive results, Also I would say weekly reports are probably the best route forward perhaps the odd additional post when results are achieved as the time goes by.

I really enjoy a challenge. I have taken part in several since I have stated my internet marketing bolog. I know that I work better if I have a set plan to work to and I can stick to it better if I am supported by a group of like minded people. So, I think is a great idea.

I agree that documenting your progress is probably better done on a weekly basis unless you have something outstanding to report.

Wishing you the best of luck with the challenge and looking forward to your updates.

Dita, great job and an awesome post. It is very well laid out and thoughtful. I too am taking this challenge and I believe with efforts of the group, we together can make it happen.

This in and of itself will make us all accountable not only to yourself but to others which I believe is greater motivation. Sometimes we don’t mind letting ourselves down, but we step up when others are depending on us. Thanks again for sharing.

    Hey Dita,

That’s a great synopsis of the challenge. I think that this is a fantastic project because 1) there are those who will no doubt scoff at the idea, so it will show them in real time that it can be done and 2) for those of us who know that it will work it will give us a huge boost in confidence and motivation, also giving us valuable experience as we put everything into practice

Really, this should be a no brainer. In any successful business one has to work hard and consistently. Hence the succcess.

    Hi Dita!

Great Blog! ๐Ÿ™‚ I love the name as well! It has a free-spirited ring to it!

I’m totally with you on this 60/60 concept (60 minutes/day in 60 days online challenge, starting with a mere $100).

I like the idea because it breaks away from the more oft and common-used “30-Day” profit schemes you see with other mainstream programs. It sets a very realistic and very real, doable timeline, given the starting seed of $100, no more, no less.

I think your emphasis on the venue of blogs & blogging, as a platform for such a challenge, Dita, is Excellent!

Many folks still believe that “blogging” is merely an online diary of sorts, just for fun, and merely an outlet for writing.

But as you’ve clearly stated, with the likes of highly successful bloggers like John Chow and Pat Flynn, there truly is gold, in blogging!

As a society moving and expanding more and more into the social sharing media, building more connected networks and trusted relationships online, the modus of blogging fits perfectly and naturally in this ever-evolving model!

And to discover and apply monetization to blogging, with such challenges as this new 60/60 challenge, Dita,……I think you’re on to something big here! ๐Ÿ™‚

I believe in it. I believe in you….so much so, that I will join you in this challenge, Dita!

I really like your blogging focus, and will implement this into my own online presence immediately!

Thanks for the great post, Dita! Keep ’em coming!

    Very Sincerely,
    A.D. Christian

Thanks A.D. Christian for your comment. Thank you for the compliments as well.

I am with you on the difference between this challenge and the 30 day challenges. They just promise way too much and for most it is just not attainable.

This is simple, consistent action over a reasonable amount of time is going to bring results.

Now this is not to say that the blog alone will make you money. It is the value that you offer to your reader, be it in the posts themselves or the products that your blog offers. Eventually when you build your list, the same applies. No value no sales!

I look forward to seeing how your challenge will turn out.
