In this WordPress Tutorial for beginners segment you will learn how to install WordPress, how to customize your newly installed blog, including how to make it “pretty” and efficient. You will also learn about categories, plugins, widgets, navigation menu, writing on your blog and much more…

If you landed on this page through a search and you do not have a domain name or a hosting account (or you don’t know what I am talking about,) please head over to the beginning of How To Start A Blog guide and start there!)

If you already know about WordPress blog platform and want to skip this introduction, head over to the tutorial: WordPress Tutorial Table of Contents .

WordPress is the most popular content management system (CMC) online, for blogs and even websites. In other words it is the most popular blogging platform in the whole Blogosphere. Because of its intuitive and easy to use interface anyone can easily publish their content (blogs). In fact, once you set it up you will realize that even a child can easily use it.

Who Uses WordPress

You will be surprised to find that among others, many famous personalities, music sites, Fortune 500 companies and large corporations are using a WordPress blog to communicate with their clients, customers and readers.

Just to give you a few examples, there are famous blogs such as Perez Hilton and TechCrunch. In the news, you will find many like ABC News, NewYorker and companies like Sony Music, Bata.

If you want to see a showcase of other famous people and companies that use WordPress blogs as their “websites” or to power their websites, head over to the Showcase and be impressed.

How To Get Started Using WordPress

Now you are probably thinking. How do I get WordPress and how much does it cost.

Well first of all, WordPress platform is 100% free. No catches, no gimmicks it is as free as the air you breathe.

All you will need to purchase is a hosting account (a place in cyberspace where your website will “live”) and you can get that for as low a $3.96 per month at Hostgator (affiliate link) which is one of the web hosting providers I use.

You will also need a domain name, which will become a URL (or an internet address) of your blog. To register a “.com” domain name will only cost you only about $10.00 or under per year. All my domains are registered with Netfirms (affiliate link).

If you are thinking of blogging as a business or an aid for a business, this cost is very, very small.

But, why don’t you start at the beginning!

    Hi Dita

A very relevant tutorial because it is one of the best blogging platform and a newbie should try it from the very beginning instead of first coming to Blogger and then switching to it.
All the tips you mentioned are worth noting and one can easily set up his own blog by following them.

You are right in the beginning one can start a blog at WordPress dot com without paying a dime and once he feels he can stay in this field he can move to WordPress dot org with his own domain and hosting to do his business with full security.

Thanks a lot for sharing this awesome tutorial.

      Hi Mi,

I am glad you liked this introduction to the WordPress tutorial series. I feel sorry for newbies who by mistake start a blog on WP.com only to find out that they don’t own the blog and are vulnerable to the whims of the .com owners.

I guess starting a WordPress blog on HostGator would be great. And what WordPress offers is a lot of free themes and plugins. It is also very cheap to get a WordPress site. And i personally i don’t know anything about programming but is still have a WordPress blog.
