How To Get People To Read Your Blog

Have you been blogging for a while now but you can’t seem to get people visit your blog and read your posts? It is the most common problem for many bloggers, particularly the newbies. It is also the most frustrating and discouraging problem and a major cause of abandoning a blog. In this article I will give you some pointers on how to get people to read your blog.

Many people that are not familiar with blogging and the way things happen online expect that because there are millions upon millions of potential viewers online, people will flock to their blog and read it. Unfortunately it is not the case.

So just how to get people to read your blog

1. Optimize your blog (at least a little)

My primary suggestion is to learn at least a little bit about search engine optimization, also referred to as SEO. SEO is a technique of optimizing your blog so that the search engines, such as Google, can find your blog.

You see, for your blog to be seen by the public, the search engines must first find you. Then they have to check you out what your blog is about, index your blog and then, when people look for a topic related to your blog, serve your article to them.

Think of it this way, when you do a Google search, you enter a query and the search engine will do it’s best to find information best suitable for your query.

The subject of SEO is quite vast, and I don’t want to include it in this article but if I can make one suggestion, it would be to make sure that you keep each blog post on a single topic.

For instance, if you are writing an article about how to make money blogging, keep your article on the subject. Use those words in the title of your post. You can name the article something like “10 Best Ways To Make Money Blogging” instead of: “10 Best Ways To Make Money Online”.

The reason is to let the search engines like Google know what your article is about. There is a big difference between search terms “make money blogging” and “make money online”, although in principle they both mean similar things.

By having a specific title that correlates well with what your blog post is about, you are helping the search engines find your blog post and list it when people do searches related to the ways to make money blogging. Also make sure that the keyword phrase “make money blogging” and phrases related to this keyword phrase are peppered throughout the blog post. Just make sure not to overdo it. The dispersal of these key phrases must be natural for both readers and search engines.

If you are stuck on your topic related word and phrases, the best is to visit Google’s Keyword Planner and do a little search before you write an article. The search will provide you with many related terms to the topic of blog post. If you don’t know how to use the keyword planner read this post…

2. Join Facebook groups related to your topic

Another excellent way to get readers to your blog is to join Facebook groups that are built around similar subject as your blog. For instance if your blog is about blogging and Internet marketing, find Facebook groups on topics related to blogging and Internet marketing. Don’t join a group about weight loss. You want to interact with like minded people who share your specific interests and who would be interested in your blogging tips.

Usually before you join a Facebook group you need to ask permission of the administrator of the group to let you join. Click on the link “Join Group” (on the right hand side, lower corner of the timeline cover) and shortly you will get a permission to join. Don’t be impatient as the process of approval make take even a few days.

Make sure to read the rules of the group and 100% abide by these rules! Introduce yourself to the group and then start commenting right away. Make sure you comments on other people’s posts and offer suggestions, tell stories, etc. Unless it is a group that promotes blog sharing, don’t jump in with a link to your blog. Interact and get to know members in these groups well before you mention that you have a blog.

Once you do mention your blog, don’t oversell it. Mention it once in passing. You might say something like: “I really like your suggestions about how to make money online. I liked how you referred to blogging as one of the ways. In fact, I recently wrote an article about 10 ways to make money blogging.” Then you can give a link. Do that only once every 10 or 20 comments you make… don’t overdo it.

Let me repeat though, it is different when the group’s objective is to promote blogs and to share comments on blogs. If you find a group like that, you must read and comment on other people’s blogs, if you want them to visit and comment on your blog posts. It is a two way street, but a very worthwhile venue.

3. Participate in forums

I have previously mentioned that you can also attract people to your blog by participating in forums and having a link to your blog in your signature.

4. Blog hop

I also talked about blog hopping, in other words, finding people’s blogs online and commenting on their blog. When you’ll find blogs that have commentluv, like my blog has, you will be allowed to leave a link to one of you blog posts there (read more about commenting on commentluv blogs here…).

When commenting on blog articles, be a good online citizen.  Leave good comments that show you are really in tune with the subject. If you will leave a crappy comment, you will be marked as a spammer by the blogger and your comment will be deleted. If on the other hand you’ll leave an interesting comment, other commenters may want to see the person behind the comment (you) and they will visit your blog.

5. Get subscribers to an email list

Another suggestion is to develop an email list. Ask people to join your list so you can let them know when you post a new article. You might even have something to give them if they join your list, but we’ll talk about freebies you can give later.

There are many different ways to get people to read your blog or, in other words to get traffic to your blog, besides the ones I mentioned. I personally like free traffic (who doesn’t) and to get the most traffic I took an excellent and an inexpensive ($7.95) course by a marketer who gets billions (not a spelling mistake) of legitimate visitors to his blog. What I learned was very helpful toward increasing readership of my blogs. You may want to have a look at it here…

In conclusion, if you have a blog, having no one come to read it, is devastating. When you have done a lot of work and spent a lot of time creating useful posts, not having people to read them, really hurts and discourages you. You have to do a little marketing of your blog to get people read your blog. The suggestions I gave you in this post are a starting point and should prove really helpful in getting people to come and visit your blog, read the posts and even interact with you by leaving comments.

One last thing, when you finally get people to read your blog, at the end of the article ask the visitors to leave a comment. Readers sometimes forget, but if you ask, they’ll generally will leave a comment. And so, if you did like this article, please leave your comment.

Well organized and thought out article, Dita!

I like how you pointed out in the example to use “make money blogging” vs “make money online”. Not only is it more targeted, but also less competitive long tail keyword phrase and give you a better chance of getting ranked higher for it in the search engines.

I also like how you use internal linking in this post with related content to other posts (also helpful for ranking both the article and your blog).

And you made another good point about writing great content, then having no one come to read it. Even though it is discouraging, if you think about it, even the top online blogs and websites all started the same way… building from no one to where they are today! 🙂

Thank you Michel for raising the points. I was only thinking of being specific in relation to the keywords, but your point about the competition is a good one. Of course, ranking for “make money blogging” is much more attainable than for make money online (next to impossible). I always do internal linking. It is very important for the readers and the search engines. I find often that readers are going to leave me comments on the original post and then subsequently on the posts that I linked to. Internal linking is very important for keeping readers engaged on your blog. Unfortunately, many bloggers are not doing it. I wrote an article about it: Importance of Internal Linking

    Hi Dita,

All that you say is good and true in regards to getting people to come to your blog. I have found in just a few weeks though that blog hopping is the best! In the last couple of weeks, I’ve received more comments and social proof than I have in a long time and I attribute it to blog hopping. I’ve scheduled myself to do 5 a day which means in a 5 day period, I should have 25 comments if they all return the favor (which usually happens). I think it’s awesome.

In addition, I always try to optimize my blog with SEO but not always. I write what I feel, but do add keywords most of the time to drive traffic. I think it’s important to do, but not every drives traffic that way. But I agree with you, optimizing is the best way and most recommended way.

Great post and thanks for breaking it down for us.

    Have a great week-end.

Hi Barbara, I really like blog hopping to and find an excellent way of getting people to read your blog. I wrote extensively about in a separate blog post and only referenced it in this post. Congrats on your results. Actually, what I find is that when I blog hop on commentluv blogs I get even more visits than one for one. I explained how it works on the post I wrote about commentluv blogs.

With respect to SEO, as long as you have a topic in mind, stick to the topic, pepper it gently with keywords, do some internal linking, you are fine. Google hates when we overdo it, anyway. As long as you have enough there for search engines to get an idea.

As you know I visited your blog (you are responding to my visit) and I really like how you are running it. It is a multitopic blog, but heck, so is Huffington post…Don’t you wish (lol)?…One day!

    Hi Dita,

Some valuable information in this post, I’ll start with your last paragraph.

Wonderful idea reminding people to ‘ask for their comment’ as you are right, people do forget. I like to encourage marketers to never forget the ‘call to action’ no matter what they are doing in their marketing efforts. Never assume you visitor understands what to do next when they are on your website. Tell ’em what to do next!

As obvious too as Facebook is for traffic generation I never connected the dots for blogging. Thanks for the tip!

Now I’m off to check into Commentluv…very interesting.

    All the best,

Thank you Doug for stopping by. It is interesting, but sometimes readers need to be reminded to leave a comment. Often they do. Sometimes I ask them to visit my Facebook page and they also do. It is always nice to have such a “lightweighted” call to action at the end of the post.
